What was announced
On 29 August the ClaudeDevs account posted that from 14 September, Anthropic will permanently raise standard weekly limits in Claude Code by 25 percent for Pro, Max, Team and seat-based Enterprise plans, and that the current 50 percent increase stays in place until then.
Read on its own, that is an increase. Read against what subscribers have been using since 13 May, it is a decrease.

125 is 25 percent above 100. It is also 17 percent below 150. Neither number is spin on its own — the question is which reference point a reader would assume, and the answer for anyone who has been using Claude Code since May is today, not last spring.
Anthropic deleted the post and corrected itself
THE PART WORTH CREDITING
Users did the arithmetic publicly within hours. Anthropic deleted the original thread and reposted a clarification stating the change plainly: compared to today, this works out to a 17 percent reduction in weekly limits on Claude Code.
That is a company correcting its own framing rather than defending it, which is not the usual outcome. The first framing was the problem. The response to being called on it was not.
Anthropic added that it is working on changes giving users more visibility and control over usage, without detail or a date.
Why the reduction is happening
The stated reason is sustainable capacity — Anthropic says it settled on the new permanent level after evaluating how much Claude Code capacity it can provide long-term.
That is consistent with a wider pattern. OpenAI restored a strict five-hour limit on Codex and Work tools days earlier. Claude Sonnet 5 API pricing rose today from $2 and $10 per million to $3 and $15, with a tokenizer change alongside. GPT-5.6 Sol's $4 and $20 rate is promotional and reverts in November.
Read together, the direction is one thing: the period where frontier-model access was priced to acquire users is ending, and flat-rate subscriptions are being calibrated against what compute actually costs.

The number to check: your weekly usage bar in Settings, Usage. Since today sits at 150 and the new level is 125, anything regularly above 83 percent would exceed the September ceiling. Below that, this does not affect you.
What to do with the fortnight
- Measure now, not on 14 September. You have two weeks of the higher ceiling to see where your real usage sits.
- Do not upgrade preemptively. Anthropic has teased usage visibility changes with no detail. Wait for those before paying five times more for Max.
- Trim before you spend. Capping diff sizes and context length usually recovers more than 17 percent, and costs nothing.
- Remember the shared pool. On Pro and Max, Claude chat and Cowork draw from the same weekly allowance as Claude Code.
